Using Your Medicare Benefits

Learn how to get the most out of your Service Benefit Plan coverage with Original Medicare.

When you’re an active federal employee, the Service Benefit Plan is your primary coverage, which means we pay for your healthcare services first. When you retire and have Medicare, it becomes your primary coverage and they pay first. If you decide to combine your Medicare and Service Benefit Plan coverage and Medicare is primary, we’ll pay for services not covered by Medicare.

When you receive care, you should show your providers both your Service Benefit Plan member ID card and your Medicare member ID card. This helps to ensure we process your claims correctly.

Medicare has its own network of Participating providers who accept Medicare's allowance. If you visit a provider outside of their network, we'll pay the difference between what Medicare pays and what you owe the provider. You can find out which providers are in the Medicare Participating provider network at

Keep in mind that if you have Basic Option or FEP Blue Focus, you must see a Preferred provider in our network. Standard Option members can see providers outside of our network.

Medicare Part A is free for most people. For Part B, you pay a premium. Currently, most people pay $144.60 a month on average, but the amount you pay is based on your income. Basic Option members who have Medicare Part A and Part B can get up to $800 with a Medicare Reimbursement Account. All you have to do is provide proof that you pay Medicare Part B premiums. Each member in your household who has Medicare Part A and Part B coverage can earn $800.
