Tips for Arthritis-Friendly Exercise

Just because you suffer from arthritis doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy exercise. Get moving with these gentle, arthritis-friendly activities. As always, before starting any exercise program, talk to your doctor and see what he or she recommends.

There are a handful of general, lower-impact exercises that can help support your body even if you have arthritis. Consider biking, golfing, hiking, swimming, tennis and walking.

Get your heart pumping with cardio

If you belong to a gym, you may want to try cardio machines, which encourage smoother motion. Try your hand at rowing, stair climbing, stationary biking or walking on a treadmill. An elliptical machine could also help you get moving.

Try taking a class

Fitness classes can be a great way to stay motivated, make friends and get into a routine. Look for classes at a local gym or other fitness center. Aerobics, swimming, martial arts, Pilates, yoga and tai chi can all be good options.

Don’t forget strength training

Lifting weights and toning muscles can help support a healthy body. You may want to consider working with an exercise ball—or lifting free weights, using resistance bands or using weight machines at your local gym.
