What Happens When Healthy Habits Backfire

With so much conflicting messaging, it can be tough to cut through the noise and know what’s really healthy versus what’s just pretending to be. We’re breaking down some habits and foods that may seem healthy but actually do more harm than good.

Diet soda
Yes, cutting down on sugar is good for you! But artificial sweeteners in diet sodas can cause other issues. Studies show that diet soda drinkers tend to eat more, especially more high-calorie foods. Try adding fun flavor to your water with lemon, cucumber or mint instead of reaching for a diet drink.

Catching up on sleep
Getting enough sleep is vital to a healthy life. But sleeping in on weekends doesn’t make up for not getting 7 to 9 hours a night during the week. It can even mess with your body clock. Get into a good rhythm by going to bed earlier if you need to and waking up at the same time every day.

Juice cleanses
Often marketed as a way to lose weight fast or give your digestive system a break, juice cleanses can be dangerous. Your liver already takes care of cleansing your body of toxins and eating whole, nutrient-rich foods gives you the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy.

Relying on supplements
It’s true that your body needs certain vitamins and minerals to work the way it should. Some dietary supplements like calcium can help with a minor nutrient deficiency. However, supplements should not be used in place of good nutrition. Try to get most of your vitamins and minerals through food when you can.
