3 Natural Menopause Remedies

Menopause can’t be avoided, but hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is not the only treatment. If you’re looking for alternatives to estrogen pills, patches, gels or creams, here are a few natural methods that may help ease your symptoms.

We recommend speaking with your doctor before trying the following supplements.

Soy
Soy contains high levels of phytoestrogens, which are estrogen-like compounds that mimic natural estrogen. Some experts believe that these phytoestrogens may help relieve menopause symptoms. Research from the University of Delaware found that having two daily servings of soy for as little as six weeks can reduce hot flash frequency and severity by as much as 26%.

Black Cohosh
Formerly used in Native American culture for medicinal purposes, the black cohosh herb has a history of healing. Now, it can be found in herbal supplements, capsules, teas and remedies for female discomfort. It is thought to help block the production of LH (luteinizing hormone), which is believed to be a cause of hot flashes.

Omegas
Healthy fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 play an important role in heart health. Menopause itself doesn’t cause heart disease, but it does increase certain risk factors, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It’s important to stay on top of this by maintaining your heart health as early as possible.

But the most important thing to do during menopause is try to keep a sound mind. Yoga, meditation and other relaxation techniques can relieve stress, which can bring clarity and counter menopausal mood swings.

As always, it’s very important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly, avoid tobacco and, most importantly, don’t let menopause consume your day-to-day. Get out there and enjoy your life.
