4 Precautions for Summer Exercise
These 4 precautions can help you stay safe and healthy as you exercise outdoors.
-
Protect yourself from the sun and heat
Wear sunscreen every day when you go outside to help keep your skin healthy, reduce risk of cancer, and cut down on signs of aging. Wear light, breathable clothing that doesn’t restrict perspiration, which helps you cool down. -
Watch the clock
The summer sun is hottest near mid-day. Try to avoid heavy activity between 10 am and 6 pm. If you have allergies or asthma, pollen counts are highest in the morning and right before dusk. -
Drink plenty of water
In the hot weather, staying hydrated can help you stay healthy. Men should drink an average of 15 cups of water daily, while women should aim for 11 cups. If you’ll be exercising in the heat, drink at least 20 ounces of fluid 2 hours before your workout. -
Don’t push it
How much activity is too much? Everyone is different, so pay attention to your personal limits—and don’t push it if you start to overheat or feel under the weather. Listen to your body. Signs of overexertion include pain, dizziness, tingling and nausea.
