Winter-Safe Your Home

From freezing temperatures to power outages and more, winter can be a real hazard to your home and family if you’re not prepared. That’s why it’s important to take precautions before, during, and after a storm hits. Follow some of the CDC’s recommended guidelines for winter safety below to ensure a happy and healthy season.

Before a Storm

  • Pay attention to weather reports.
  • Inspect chimneys once a year.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace any batteries.
  • Make sure thermometers are easy to read.
  • Re-caulk and/or weather-strip windows and doors.
  • Keep pets indoors.

During a Storm

  • Operate wood stoves, fireplaces and space heaters safely indoors.
  • Use flashlights or lanterns during a power outage before lighting candles.
  • Never use an electric generator or a gas or charcoal grill indoors. The fumes are deadly.
  • Keep doors and windows shut to conserve heat in your home.
  • Monitor body temperature for infants and older adults.
  • Prevent pipes from freezing by leaving water taps slightly open.
  • Stay warm with well-balanced meals and avoid alcohol and caffeine.

After a Storm

  • Prevent mold growth by cleaning your home as recommended. Remember, never mix bleach and ammonia!
  • Only eat and drink food and water you know are safe.
  • Smell gas? Do not enter and call 911 immediately. Keep away any open flames and don’t turn on any lights.
  • Avoid direct contact with floodwater.
  • Wash your hands often or use antibacterial hand gel.
  • Prevent tetanus or infection by seeking medical attention for any deep cuts or wounds.
