Working together to prevent childhood obesity

Obesity isn’t just a problem for adults. The CDC reports that nearly one in five American children are obese. A child’s health greatly affects their health later in life. But we’re committed to helping provide the right resources and information to set them up for success as adults.

How do you know when a child is obese?

Unlike how it’s measured for adults, obesity in children is measured by determining their body mass index-for-age (BMI-for-age). A BMI-for age percentile greater than 95% is considered obese. Your child’s doctor will be able to determine if your child has a BMI-for-age higher than 95% and help you find an action plan that’s specific to their health, if necessary.

Children with a BMI-for-age above 95% are more likely to have a BMI of 30 or higher as adults and have a higher risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure and liver and heart disease. Obesity can also impact children’s mental health, potentially contributing to lower confidence, anxiety and sometimes depression.

Small lifestyle changes that can make a big impact

Exercise

It’s recommended that children get between 150 and 300 minutes of moderately intense physical activity every week

Mindful Eating

Eating together encourages more mindful eating compared to eating in front of a TV or while on a phone

No ‘Clean Plate Club’

Teaching a child to finish when they feel full helps them know when to stop eating

Sleep

A lack of sleep or restless sleep increases levels of ghrelin, a hormone responsible for feeling hungry

Manage Stress

Some people turn to food to comfort them when they’re stressed

Positivity

Instead of being critical about what your child is doing wrong, encourage them for the things they do right

Connect with a registered dietician

From your phone or computer, you can connect with a registered dietician who can evaluate your nutritional needs and help you develop personalized meal plans. These virtual visits are covered in full for all Service Benefit Plan members.
