Your Open Season Checklist

For many, the end of the year is the busiest time, between work, family and the holidays all in full swing.

It’s also the time when Open Season comes around. This is the period when all actively working or retired federal employees can choose or change their Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) plan for the following year. You can click here to see a list of what’s new for FEP.

We know there can be a lot to consider. Don’t worry! This checklist can help make sure you have everything you need to get up to speed before the new year.

Make the most of your benefits
You still have time to use your benefits and earn rewards if you’re eligible. Sign up for MyBlue®, review your contact information and make updates, and participate in our wellness programs.

Check when Open Season is running
Open Season typically runs for four weeks. This year, Open Season is November 13 through December 11. If you’re happy with your current coverage, you don’t need to do anything during Open Season. Your coverage will automatically carry over to the next year.

Keep in mind that you may be able to update your coverage outside of Open Season if you experience a qualifying life event (QLE), like getting married, having a baby, getting divorced or a change in employee status.

Think about your health needs
Think about your current needs and what they might be a year from now. Do you expect any big life changes? Are you happy with your current plan? What about your dependents? Answering these questions now will help you make the most informed decisions.

If you’re new to FEP, try our AskBlueSM FEP Medical Plan Finder to get a recommendation for a health plan that meets your needs. In minutes, you can answer some simple questions about your needs and it’ll automatically recommend a plan for you.

Consider dental and vision coverage
Many different parts of your health are connected and influence each other, including your oral and vision health.

Consider enrolling in or updating your Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) coverage. Having dental and vision coverage not only helps you save on out-of-pocket costs, people who have coverage are also more likely to get the care they need, too.

Compare all your options
You’ll want to enroll in the plan that makes the most sense for your needs and budget. It’s also a good idea to check the benefit updates and changes for next year.

Visit our How to Enroll page for more details about how to enroll or update your coverage.
